The Art and Wellbeing Project

Frances Clarke is a contemporary visual artist working at the interface of art and science. The research-based practice employed by Frances extends across all elements of her latest projects, from painting to viewer participation and scientific enquiry. Frances’s work currently includes two interconnected strands: The Art and Wellbeing Project research and The Blue Pearl Installation, combining her interests in health, wellbeing and aesthetic experience.

The Art and Wellbeing Project uses electrophotonic imaging (EPI) to explore the relationship between the painting and the viewer, and its wider implications for human connection.

The Blue Pearl Installation comprises an immersive matrix of EPI data images generated from The Apollo Finger (ring finger) of the left hand. In the tradition Frances draws on, the Apollo finger is associated with the organs and systems regulated by the pineal gland, the “third eye” that Descartes called the “principal seat of the soul”. In the teachings of Master Choa Kok Sui (Pranic Healing and Arhatic Yoga) and of Swami Muktananda, this is also associated with the Blue Pearl: a tiny point of blue light seen in deep meditation, described as the seed of consciousness. It is the source of the name of her paintings, The Blue Pearl Series. The installation will present the energetic imprints from hundreds of participants, constructing an environment in which universal interconnectivity is not only visually represented but – as their awareness of interconnectivity expands through repetition of the motif – is also experienced collectively in real time by each viewer and group of viewers within the space.
