Stefania Carrozzini Gallery, Giudecca, Venice · 11–26 February 2023
In February 2023 I took part in Terrestrial Grammar (Grammatiche Terrestri), a group exhibition of fourteen artists curated by Stefania Carrozzini at her gallery on the Giudecca in Venice.
This was the Venice chapter of the exhibition, which had opened the previous November at MyMicroGallery in Milan, where I also showed.
I travelled to Venice for the opening on Saturday 11 February.

As in all my exhibitions with Stefania, I showed two paintings from The Blue Pearl Series, Blue Pearl II – BP12, with its deep blue centre, and Blue Pearl II – BP13, a soft lilac centre on grey-green. The paintings were not made for the exhibition; rather, the themes of the series, spirituality and the interconnectedness of all things, sit naturally alongside Stefania’s idea of a terrestrial grammar, in which nothing in nature is truly separate.

Stefania’s curatorial text contrasts two ways of describing the earth. One is the rational grammar of maps and satellite images; the other is the grammar of art, in which places, physical and inner, become part of our emotional and spiritual life. The exhibition explored the city, the landscape, borders and the experience of living on the planet, and closed with Joseph Beuys’s hope that “human being and nature with a united soul will build a new world”.
